Is God being used as a "gap filler?"?

It seems as though instead of trying to find scientific theories and intellectual rationales for the happenings in the universe God is just being inserted into the equation to fill the gap. We don't know everything about evolution and the Big Bang so we just insert God into the questionable areas. Is this done because it's just easier? Is this done because we *have* to incorporate some higher power being into it?
