What did GSP mean when he said "there's a difference between a fighter and a martial artist?"?

i listened to st.pierre say this and i'm a bit perplexed. perhaps gsp is not as spiritual or philosophical as bruce lee was, but in a fight between a "martial artist" and a "fighter", don't fighters often beat martial artists? does he consider matt hughes, who has no rankings that i know of, a martial artist? if gsp is seeking some sort of higher level of spirituality in the martial arts, is he contradicting himself by actually competing?
